Wicker/Rattan furniture – Good for Commercial?

Plenty of clients come into our showroom looking for some sort of tropical outdoorsy type furniture, however a comment that always comes up is:

“We don’t want wicker because it unravels”

One thing to consider is that a lot of the wicker chairs you know and love and still entirely hand made. The process is incredibly labour intensive (I’ve included a photo from one of our recent trips to our manufacturers in Asia to demonstrate the complexity). Due to the amount of labour required the importance of quality control is even more evident. Connection between the frame and the “Wicker” need to be solid, and the weave evenly tensioned. Other factors include the quality of material and UV resistance.

Unfortunately the biggest issues with wicker chairs is your customer will pick the weave apart. Once it starts to unravel, it quickly starts looking tacky. So what’s the solution?

Introducing – Resin Rattan

Injection moulded polypropylene chairs are the perfect alternative to wicker. The manufacturing process is highly automated and is essentially injecting super heated liquid plastic into a mould under incredible pressure. The result has the style of a rattan chair, however being injection moulded it has incredible strength, durability, and can not possibly unravel. Further more, polypropylene chairs are waterproof, and UV stabilised for outdoor use

We have a full range of Resin Rattan products including Chairs, Table, Sunlounges, Coffee Tables, and more, suitable for anything from the local cafe, through the a full outdoor furniture package for a pool/beach side resort.

The wicker chair we stock are commercial quality and are still suitable for undercover outdoor use, however there is the draw back of potential unravelling. On the other hand, the Resin Rattan Are solid plastic and have a different look and feel. At the end of the day, it comes down to what you think will be most suitable for your venue, however for longevity, the resin rattan will work best.
